Course Content

Approaches in Political Science
The study of political science uses traditional and modern approaches, broadly categorized by their focus. Traditional approaches include philosophical, historical, legal, and institutional methods, which often focus on "what should be" and the formal structures of government. Modern approaches are more empirical and scientific, with the behavioral approach focusing on observable political behavior, the post-behavioral approach incorporating values, and others like systems and structural-functional analysis examining how different parts of society interact. Traditional Approaches Philosophical: Examines normative and ethical issues like justice, rights, and equality, and was the oldest approach in political science. Historical: Studies the origins and development of political institutions, and the role of individuals and events in the past. Institutional/Legal: Focuses on the formal structures of government, such as legislatures, courts, and constitutions, and the legal framework within which they operate. Modern Approaches Behavioral: Emphasizes the scientific study of actual political behavior, using empirical data and scientific methods to understand individual and group actions. Post-behavioral: A response to the behavioral approach, which re-emphasizes the importance of values, such as justice and equality, in political inquiry alongside empirical study. Systems: Views politics as a system with inputs (like demands from society) and outputs (like policy decisions), and analyzes how different parts of the system interact. Structural-Functional: Analyzes how different structures within a political system fulfill specific functions to maintain the system's overall stability. Other Modern Approaches: Include other perspectives that are used to study politics in a more scientific and fact-based manner, such as the sociological, economic, and psychological approaches.
